Living With Terror
Terror is a word used alot in todays political arena, we have the War on Terror, terrorist attacks through out the middle east, the aftermath of the 9/11 bombings that haunt all of our dreams. Americans today know a thing or two about terror. 9/11 changed the way we look and feel about our homelands security and just how vulnerable we can be to those determined enough to commit such crimes aginst humanity. However in the years since 9/11 the attitude of the average American citizen has moved away from fear of another attack to a more calm and "before" sence of security. Airports are still on high alert, but not nearly as bad as the months and years immediatly following 9/11, sure it's an inconvienance to not be able to bring more than 3 oz of any liquid past the security checks, but compared to 4 hour long lines to have every item and every bag searched it seems like a walk down the street. The point is americans don't live with a sence on constant terror, never knowing what will happen next. There is a firm solid plan in action and people can take confort in that and move on.
However in many places in the world that is not the case, terror is just as common to many countries and safety is to us. One of the most politically tumult contries in the world now is Israel. "I lived a lot of my life in terror. its not exactly the best life out there, but soon you become numb and just go about trying to ignore it, but you can't because you see it everyday." Besan Quffa said during an interview about her home town of Ramallah. Ramallah is a Palestinian city in the central West Bank with a population nearly 25,500 and is approximatly 6 miles north of Jerusalem. Besan has lived in Israel for her whole life, and has moved to the United States to attend school at Brigham Young University.
Living in constant fear of attack and retaliations due to attacks from groups as Hamas or other occupational violence, seems to be an everyday occurance for people like Besan. "Every Palestinian (who lives there) is affected by Israeli occupation, you can’t run away from it you can’t hide from it, its everywhere," Besan said. "I and my family lived through crossfire happening outside our house; we had 67 bullet holes in our roof."
Every aspect of Besan's life is affected by terror, from the way she attends school to her attempts to go to Sunday services. Besan a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, would have to sneak past check points and enter Jerusalem illegally if she wanted to go to church. "I cant go...anywhere outside Ramallah. From what I have observed they only got worse, first it was one checkpoint, then there were two, and now there is a wall."
Life is very differant when you live in constant fear, even in our more industrialized countries we still have the lingering fears. In 2005 the London Underground tube stations were bombed by muslim extremists, marking the most devastating attack in Londons modern history. How has this affected the people of England, and London in particular? "At the end of the day, threat of terrorist attacks or not, you can't put your life on hold." Kate Ngai said "No one knows if or when anything will be attacked and to live in fear (or terror as it were) is to give the upper hand to those terrorists. If you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time than it is pure bad luck on your part." Kate and her Husband Matt have been going to school in London for several years. "there were some some bomb scares and tube stops were closed. But honestly they don't make too much of a big deal out of it."
A very differant opinon from a very differant part of the world. Dispite the distance and intensity, the lasting effects of terrorist attacks can be felt for years down the road.

My Father on Facebook?
It's more likely than you may think. So last Sunday dad wanted me to help him learn how to use Facebook, so he could try to use it for advocacy and other things of its ilk that our father is so prone to do. So I sat down with him and after showing him a few basic things I figured it was time to get him some friends.
I guided him to the search friends function and had him look for my by name. It brought up 3 differant Brad Kinsels much to my bewildered fathers amazement. He was so shocked that there would be other Kinsels out there that he didn't know, he insisted on looking at the friends of each one to see if he recognized any differant faces. I dont think dad had relized the magnitude that is Facebook until about then. I know Kinsel isn't a common name, in fact there are only a few places in most of the US where the name even comes up in census information.
All that aside, we finally got navigated to my page, and the first and only thing dad could comment on was how terrible my profile picture was, a simple phone shot that in dads words "makes my nose looks 3x its normal size." Thanks dad. The next thing he couldn't get around was the status updates, mine happened to be at the time "Brad is not threatening to kill you" which for the awesomely educated is a quote from the game Portal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(video_game). In all it was a funny experiance to see him try to come to terms what us "youngsters" do with our time online. So if you seen him write on your wall make sure to write something back.

wow, that sucks.
So I had a really nice long blog about iPods and how i've become an iPod person with my new iTouch and junk but blogspot decided to crash and not save the post while I was trying to publish it....that sucks hard. So all your going to get a lame wordy blog post about nothing in general.
Nothing to report, I've been going to the gym every day for about 3 weeks now and dropped ten pounds, woot go me, i'd like to lose more and since i'm unemployeed it makes it pretty easy to find time to go when I want to rather than at the end of the day and i'm just tired. So probbaly the most akward thing is when you run into some one you know at the gym, nothing is worse than being all gross and sweaty and your buddy from comms class comes up and wants to chat it up for ten minutes ruining your rythm and groove. Or seeing that hot girl from your math class as your pounding out your last ten sit ups lookings like a sweaty monkey. Oh yeah both happend to me in the last week.
Why is it when you see some one you know at the gym or they see you they all ways ask "So what areyou doing" Duh i'm at the gym i'm trying to work out dont be retarded. I know its just polite small talk but really? What do you say to something like that?

iPod People
Ok so i'm usually the first person in my family to get any kind of cool looking gadget, largly because my family isn't realy hip on cool toys. I was the first to advocate the SNES in my family, new computers, trampolines ect all master planned by myself. Now of all my toys i've owned over the years I think my most cherished ones have been my iPods, yes with an s, there have been several.
I got my first iPod while on my Mission, crazy I know, but an old companion and I started a habbit of saving 100 of our 140 a month and "living on faith". Every month on "pay day" we'd stick 100 into an envelope and seal it up and toss it in our suit case to be forgotten. Well it came to be about 3 months before I was to go home and I had around 800 dollars saved up. I'd managed to get every companion I had since then to also save the money, so when one day my companion turns to me and says "Elder I have 300 dollars I want an iPod" who was I to deny him, seeing as i'd never had one and it seemed like the right thing to do with the money i'd saved we went down on the next P-Day to Best Buy and wam bam thank you mam, we were iPod People. Now having an iPod as a missionary is a novel experiance, especially when it can play brick out and tetris, we were kings! We were able to find a nice member in the ward willing to spend about an hour or two ripping out entire missionary music collection and helping us get it onto our iPods.
Fast forward a year. So after a year or so and being home and my Ipod getting slightly abused over time, I went to Cyndi's house over night for some sort of family function. I happened to leave my iPod in my car, not out in the open mind you but in the glove compartment under some junk as I usually did. I went to leave the next day...and my iPod was gone. It was my own fault for not locking the car but still, that sucked.
One month later I decide its time to reinvest, this time in a shiny new black one, boo-ya! It worked and it worked well, by the time I was done with it it had scratches and marks all over it. However all was not pretty in the park, I was at the gym one night and set it in the little neat containers they have(not a cup one) I wasn't using it that night because I was watching somthing on the TV, well i got done running and pulled my iPod out, and only then relized that my container was full of about 3 inches of water...thanks Golds Gym, of course I set it condustor side down. It never worked right since, half the time it would eat the battery in about 30 min and some times it would go into diagnostic mode and not want to leave...for like a month. It was bad news bears. I managed to sell it though for abotu 50 bucks, towards the end when I cleaned out the head and it worked pretty well.
Now just this last christmas I upgraded to the newest and quit possibly the greatest iPod ever, the iTouch. Life is pretty sweet

Lazy
Im too lazy today to think of anything special to write about so your just going to be a boring old life update, which to all 3 of my family members (75% of my total readership) is what they really want. Sorry Mark.
So not much has changed i'm still unemployeed and carefree. I've signed on at this point in time to go and do installs for APX Alarm systems over the summer, i'm not sure yet were i'm going so you can save that question for another time. Hopefully it will work out and I get a good area or i'll end up back in provo broke as a joke again, haha that would suck. I think it will be fun to get out of Utah for awhile again and go see another place. I'm going with some of my friends and the training meetings so far havn't been all that daunting so I think i'll be able to handle it ok.
I just read that Larry H Miller died on the 20 of this month, kinda odd to think about really, such a large local name here in Utah who has been around and prominent for as long as I can remember, largly in part to Mom and th Jazz. Anywho not much going on with me just living the life of the poor using all the tricks i've learned from my father over the years (hello 10 for 10 Albertsons)

All we want to do is eat your brains...
Ok so i'm a nerd, and any of my readers can attest to that fact. I've in the last 7 months or so become extremely interested in all things to do with Zombies. It stareted when I first read the book The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead http://www.amazon.com/Zombie-Survival-Guide-Complete-Protection/dp/1400049628/ref=bxgy_cc_b_img_a
Which lead me to reading World War Z, which is pretty much the like the Bible to zombie fans, both are by Max Brooks (Mel Brooks' son). Both are written in such a calm clear way that when you're done you'll start looking around at the places you live and work and think "Just how can I make this more zombie proof." I absolutely recomend both books if you want a compeling read.
As far as movies go its hard to sift through the trash and come out with gems worth your time. You of course have classic's like Dawn of the Dead to always fall back on. If you want somthing more comedy related there is Shaun of the Dead. Some of my all time favorite movies are 28 Days later and 28 Weeks later, both fantastic zombie movies. Resident Evil is cheesy and lame but worth a watch if you can catch it.
I picked up a copy of Left 4 Dead on my xbox and its amazing, its a post zombie war survival game, run and gun and survive really fantastic if you dig shooting zombies(dont we all?) I'd love to get some good suggestions from any one on any thing Zombie related that might be worth my time. I am pretty snobby when it comes to the horor genres I choose to bring into my life, so any old zombie movie wont do it needs to be really really good.

Just say no to Disney...
Ok I have a bone to pick with the Disney corporation. I refuse to wear anything with your name on it. Unless you're extremely young or very very adorably old then it is never ever ever ok to wear a giant Mickey Mouse emblazoned across your chest for all the world to see.
I dont know what it is, but I just cant take a person seriously who wears somthing like that. It's as if they are saying to me, "I hate you and i'm forcing you to hate me by my poor choice in clothing." Maybe I was just raised better than that.
Let me give you an example of this in my real life. Now i've always had this prejudice aginst Disney. In one of my comms classes i'm working on a group project with a girl who wears somthing like this about every day(Looney Tunes clothing is up there too by the way) every time she talks I just want to smack her in the back of the head and tell her to go change.
Ok maybe its not as bad as i'm making it seem to be, but really people...just say no to Disney.

WoW Head
So as you all may or may not know, i'm an avid World of Warcraft player, i'm not ashamed of this fact and i've always been pretty open about it. Surprisingly my family has pretty much let it slide through the years. Maybe its just that i've been playing for so long that they dont care any more or all the available material for jabs at it has been played out.
I've been playing since around March of 06 so just shy of 3 full years. Now I wouldn't normally bring up something like this but i'm strapped for time and I need to get this blog posted and i'm pretty much out of material for this week. So, while I wait for my Naxxrammas to get going i'll post a neat little picture of my main Character and tell you a little bit about my Wow playing experiance.
My main character(commonly called toons) is named Mookyroo. Now a name is somthing you have with you a long time, its not somthing you can change easily and you start to build a reputation with it. I originally started this toon as a low level toon for Battle grounds(Or a Twink) I played at the 29 level Bracket for a long time and when first wow expansion came out, The Burning Crusade, I decided I was going to level him to max and try it out. Back then his name was Healugood, I know lame but it was funny at the time. Later in his life I switched over to him full time from my warrior. I renamed him Enix(for only ten real life dollars).
I played on the Lothar server for many years, now the servers are like your own personal worlds, you know the players there you know the guilds and over a long enough period of time you start to be known your self. I recently transfered servers(another real life cost) to play on the Durotan server with my buddy Scott. Now leaving a realm you've played on for almost 3 years is akin to moving way during your senior year in high school. As nerdy as it sounds all my in game friends were gone, most of them resented me for leaving my guild(which was kinda full of fail) to join a more progressive and maybe a more hardcore raiding guild.
So here I am on a new server with only one person known and a new name because mine was taken :( sadness I know. Ok that seems long enough, here is a great video of a something hilarious, my treat to you if you actually read nerd post. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4KiRV2qrZk

Hail to the Chef
So I'm not so hot at cooking, I can cook but I dont really appreciate it like I should. Last friday we decided we were going to make sugar cookies, more specifically Dinosaur cookies! We had all the stuff we needed dough, icing, sprinkles and people, all we were missing was the cutters. So off we go to Wal-Mart. Now being at a young and impressionable age I thought we could simply go to Wal-Mart, pick up the cutters and be on our way. I was mistaken.
Now i'm a fairly level headed person, I can figure most problems out with minimal effort on my own, however we couldn't find the damned cutters anywhere in the store! We looked everywhere, we finally had to track down a blue-vested helper man to track them down for us. Where were they? snuggled inbetween the crotchet needles and the scrapbooking supplies....wtf? Our biggest oversight was the time of year, with only 3 weeks till V-day the only selection available was assorted hearts and cupids. Downtrodden at the thought of not being able to make our dinosaur cookies we grabbed teh value pack of hearts and left.
We decided to make the best of the situation and make convesation heart cookies, so with home made frosting and sprinkles in hand we went to work. Now we arn't the greatest artists nor did we have the longest attention span, and i'm pretty sure an entire tube thingy of sprinkles ended up on the floor at some point, but through blood sweat and tears we finally made ourselves some fine looking cookies.

So I finally watched Lost...
And its just as stupid as I thought It would be. I watched the Recap episode before the season premier to catch up on what I missed this last 5 years or so...wow what the crap is this crap? magic Islands? cult presance? Crazy crazies? the longest list of coincidences ever in the history of the broadcast world? they arn't lost any more, in fact they've been found, series over right? NO NO NO!!! Lets throw in TIME TRAVEL!!! Now we can revist any plot we want and rework it however we damn well please! Eff yeah! Money in the bank! So yeah, i'm not impressed, bring on the flames family!
The king of Risk!
So I havn't played a game of Risk since my mission. Risk to many means many things, to some it's an intolerably long game that gets old quickly, to others it's a brilliant time of tactics and strategy. When we played on my mission I remember games taking up to 4 hours and mission companions cursing each other out and at rare times some almost violent confrntations. Few games in our life have this kind of power.
Treaties and sackstabbing, thats the name of the game it seems. So last night my roomate Alex brings home his Lord of the Rings Risk, so we get a group of 4 of us to set down and get ready for some hardcore middle earth action(now with more hobbits). The players are myself, my roomates Drew and Kevin, and our token female presence Natalie. Now LOTR Risk is played diferant than regular risk what with heros and capital cities, all of which give you a +1 to your dice rolls.
As it goes Kevin and I draw the evil and Drew and Natalie end up and the sissy elves. Now the game isn't supposed to be played 2v2 but thats how it ended up. We started at 8 pm and finished around 2:30 am, A continous back and forth battle that finally ended when we broke Drew's stronghold in sothern Middle Earth while I held off natalies eagle battalion's in Moria so as to cut off her ability to reinforce and releive pressure on Drew beseiged forces.
Eventually in a last ditch effort Natalie back doors Kevin by taking out 3 strongholds in Mordor and bunkering down, it wasn't a winning strategy but it bought her several more turns while we finished mopping up drews forces and taking his cards for instant force turn ins!
Eventually Natalie was routed from our home land and the game was won...finally.

The time has come.
Today, Americans were witness to a historic event. President Barack Obama took an oath to protect and lead America in a new age of change and hope, as the 44 president of the United States of America
With the nation in the worst economic slump since the great depression and trust in the government at its lowest since Vietnam, words like 'hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriots" seems to be like music to the ears of weary Americans. These words were spoken to a crowd estimated as high as two million, filling the courtyard as far as the eye could see.
President Obama wasted no time in setting his ideals and goals forth, to curb the "sapping confidence across our land – a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights." His words ring true with those in attendance as he pauses for a loud cheer, he goes on to say "Today...the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America – they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord"
President Obama promises bold and swift action, to make good on his many promises to these American people that so abosultly belive in him and desperatly want the change he promises he can afford them.
The social impact of having an african american President is significant, love Obama or hate him, the social change he represents by his success alone is note worthy of the history books. President Obama was not shy to bring up the issue of race and equality in his speech, bridging the gaps and forming new bonds, offering the hand of peace to the world, while remaning strong in our convictions, "We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you"
Today America saw a vision of history in the making, time will tell if that vision becomes a reality.

So yeah...
Alrighty lets get this show on the road. I've never actually kept a blog and have in the past never liked reading them much. Ok maybe that was a little harsh. Actually I kind of like the idea os having some one reading my thoughts and ideas and hanging onto my every word, thats kind of why i'm choosing journalism as a major. On the other hand I dispise having people beg me to read their blog and comment on their oh so tender picture of their children or pets.
Enough prattle, I think i'll start now. So i've been unemployed for about two weeks now, I recently quit working for Freedom Wireless for several reasons. The first reason being that I was tired of working, I know who isn't right? but i've been working there since about 3 weeks after I got home from my mission back in March 06! I know right! Almost three years at the same job is kind of increadble for some one my age. I also quit because I'm tired of trying to hock products onto people, especially without being a direct location, trying to sell some one a product with your hands tied down by Verizons Indirect sales restrictions is like trying to tell with a gag on your mouth.
I've been wanting to quit for years, literaly YEARS! However the job was sweet the pay was decent especially when you consider the work to pay ratio. I remeber telling my friend Caitlin a while back how badly I hated my job and how depressing it was to drive 30 minutes to and from every day to go do something I hated doing. I just got a letter from my friend Caitlin a month or two ago and she come home from her mission in March, and here I was stuck in the same place doing the exact same thing. Not so cool as I thought I was.
Which brings me back today, sitting in my appartment, I woke up about 3 hours ago and I think now that my homework is finished i'm gonna go kill some Ninja's in Ninja Gaiden 2 for my xBox 360. Life is good!
My roomate travis and I plan to go sell our plasma some time this week, I'm kinda apprehensive about that as I dont relish the idea of a 19 year old college student jacking up my veins in an attempt to learn how to administer a shot. Bills do pay them selves though so I'm just gonna have to buck and do it. So look forward to that post next time.
Cheers
